Dr. Benedict Blackwell is a supporting character in Mighty No. 9. He is the creator of the Xel.

    History[]

    Before Mighty No. 9[]

Before the beginning of the game's story, Dr. Blackwell was a respected scientist who created the Xel technology and used it to create advanced robots. His son, following his father's lead, created a robot called Trinity that could absorb Xel and use it in its own structure, but Blackwell saw the dangers it posed and had it shut down.

Later on, a cyber terrorist attack hit the country and Blackwell was tried and found guilty of the attack, being placed in prison as a result. Years later it was revealed that Gregory Graham was responsible for the attack and that he framed Blackwell for it.

After Blackwell's imprisonment, his son Bill Blackwell left Cherry Dynamics and joined SANDA Technologies to create more robots free of Graham's watch.

    Mighty No. 9[]

During the robot rampage caused by Trinity, Mr. Graham once again blamed Dr. Blackwell by the incident despite of him already being in jail. This raises the suspicion of both Dr. White and Dr. Sanda, which leads them to investage further.

Eventually Dr. Sanda and Call reach Blackwell's cell for answers and he explains he was only trying to prevent the catastrophe by shutting down all the robots in America to stop Trinity's assimilation from spreading.

In a final scene, after Beck fights Trinity at the Battle Colosseum, Dr. White comes to his cell to confront him about how Beck is proof of his theories about creating self-learning robots being revolutionary. Blackwell refutes this by stating that it proves nothing as it was his very same invention which caused the crisis in the first place and how this technology will always present latent danger, to which Dr. White lashes out at him and leaves the room. Dr. Blackwell is left to ponder if Beck's powers won't become a liability later on.

It's unknown whether or not he was released from jail after the events of the game, Dr. White's visit to his cell would suggest that he wasn't despite of his innocence being proven.

    Trivia[]

    • Dr. Blackwell could be based on Dr. Wily and Dr. Weil from the Mega Man series.
    • He's never refered by his full name in english media, only in the Japanese dub and promotional material he's mainly refered to as "Benedict Blackwell".
