Dr. William White is a supporting character in Mighty No. 9. He is the creator of the Mighty Numbers, including the main character, Beck. He is a friend of Dr. Sanda and a researcher at SANDA Technologies. His real name is Bill Blackwell.
Appearance[]
Dr. White is a young Caucasian man of average height with a slender frame. He has green eyes and distinctively voluminous brown hair styled in an afro-like shape. His attire consists of a slightly tattered lab coat with frayed edges, a dark orange shirt, and dark blue pants. He wears green and yellow slip-on shoes, adding a casual touch to his otherwise professional appearance.
A blue satchel hangs from his left hip, secured by two brown belts wrapped around his waist. The satchel bears a triangular emblem composed of three connected dots—matching the symbol displayed on Beck's headphone-like coverings.
Story[]
Before Mighty No. 9[]
Long before the events of Mighty No. 9, Dr. White, then known as Bill Blackwell, was a leading roboticist at Cherry Dynamics. Among his creations, his most ambitious project was Trinity, a robot designed to learn and evolve by assimilating Xel data. However, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Blackwell, shut down the Trinity Project, fearing the dangers of its capabilities. Following this, Bill Blackwell left Cherry Dynamics, eventually adopting the name William White and joining SANDA Technologies. During his time there, he developed the Mighty Numbers, a group of nine advanced robots embedded with his synthetic heart routine, granting them the ability to grow and evolve.
Mighty No. 9[]
Dr. White first appears at the beginning of the City stage, urging Beck to return to the lab while commenting on the chaos unfolding around him—including the malfunctioning robots wreaking havoc. He remains in communication with Dr. Sanda, who is stationed at the lab.
After Beck defeats the Round Digger, Dr. White and Dr. Sanda reach out to SANDA Technologies Headquarters in Japan for assistance. However, their request is denied, as the Japanese government refuses to take action until the root cause of the malfunctions is identified. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Dr. White suggests that Beck track down and defeat the remaining eight Mighty Numbers, believing that assimilating them will reverse the viral outbreak.
As Beck successfully neutralizes his corrupted siblings, Dr. White uncovers a disturbing truth—the malfunctions originate from Trinity, who has been secretly reactivated by Gregory Graham, setting the stage for the ultimate confrontation.
Personality[]
Dr. White is a visionary roboticist, deeply passionate about his work and driven by a desire to push the boundaries of technological advancement—not for profit, but for progress. However, his relentless pursuit of innovation sometimes leads to unforeseen consequences, though he learns from his missteps.
Often described as “young but socially inept,” Dr. White maintains a calm and analytical demeanor, even in the face of crisis. This calculated approach can make him seem distant or aloof, though it’s rarely intentional. His enthusiasm for robotics frequently clashes with the cautious nature of his father, who criticizes him for being reckless. This strained relationship, coupled with his disillusionment with Cherry Dynamics, led Dr. White to sever ties with both—changing his identity and leaving the company behind after a major falling-out. Among his closest companions, Dr. Sanda appears to be the only one who knows the full extent of his past.
Abilities[]
Dr. White is a brilliant roboticist, highly skilled in both mechanical engineering and programming. He is responsible for designing numerous combat robots, including the Mighty Numbers and various enemy units featured in Mighty No. 9. Though perfecting his creations took time, he pioneered the development of A.I. capable of assimilating Xels and mimicking traits from other machines. His most groundbreaking achievement was the synthetic heart routine, a revolutionary code that granted robots human-like sentience and sapience—fundamentally redefining their capacity for growth and evolution.

Trivia[]
- Dr. White is directly based on Dr. Light from the Mega Man series.
- Despite being referred to as Dr. White in official materials, Doctor White is never referred to as "Doctor" in Mighty No. 9, but instead as "Professor". The reasons for this discrepancy can be attributed to the fact that the Japanese honorific for people with a high academic expertise degree are refered as "hakase" (both interchangeably translating as "doctor" or more frequently "professor"). This confusion is also present in the Mega Man series.
- Most of his early-concept arts depict Dr White with a strong resemblance to those of Dr. Blackwell, probably hinting to the relation between the two.
- Early-concept art have a strong resemblance to Dr. Tenma from Astro Boy.
- According to Shinsuke Komaki, his hairstyle is made to resemble a gear.
- Dr. White bears an an uncanny resemblance to the Inspector Alfendi Layton (both being slim scruffy young men wearing lab coats and both happen to have a split personalities: In Dr. White's case changing his name from Bill Blackwell to William White, and Alfredi suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder) from the Professor Layton series, developed and published by Level-5, who would later acquire developer Comcept some time after Mighty No. 9's release.

- During RAY's campaign, one of the cutscenes features Dr. White's permanent record file in a monitor screen. While this text is very small and even mistranslated, certain details can be gathered from it.
- William White (Bill Blackwell) is the son of Doctor Benedict Blackwell and a female robot engineer (name unknown).
- Under the influence of both parents Bill/William develops interest in robotics from an early age.
- However, due busy nature of his parent's careers, Bill/William's upbringing was handled by robots. Because of this Bill/William develops a familiar attachment towards machines.
