Dr. Benedict Blackwell is a supporting character in Mighty No. 9. He is the creator of the Xel.
History[]
Before Mighty No. 9[]
Prior to the events of Mighty No. 9, Dr. Blackwell was a respected scientist known for pioneering Xel technology, using it to develop advanced robots. His son, following in his footsteps, created Trinity, a robot capable of absorbing Xel and incorporating it into its own structure. However, Blackwell feared the potential dangers of such an ability and shut the project down.
Some time later, a cyber terrorist attack struck the nation, and Blackwell was accused, tried, and convicted for the crime—resulting in his imprisonment. Years later, the truth emerged: Gregory Graham was the true culprit, having framed Blackwell to cover his tracks.
In the wake of Blackwell's imprisonment, his son, Bill Blackwell, severed ties with Cherry Dynamics and joined SANDA Technologies, seeking to develop robots free from Graham’s influence.
Mighty No. 9[]
During the robot rampage triggered by Trinity, Graham once again placed the blame on Dr. Blackwell, despite his continued incarceration. This suspicious accusation led Dr. White and Dr. Sanda to investigate further. Eventually, Dr. Sanda and Call visited Blackwell’s cell, where he revealed his true intentions: he had attempted to prevent the disaster by shutting down every robot in America, hoping to halt Trinity’s rampant assimilation.
In the final confrontation following Beck’s battle with Trinity at the Battle Colosseum, Dr. White confronted Blackwell, insisting that Beck’s success was proof of his vision—self-learning robots were revolutionary. Blackwell, however, dismissed the claim, arguing that Beck’s existence did not validate the technology but instead reaffirmed its inherent dangers. He reminded White that it was his own invention that had caused the crisis, warning that such power would always carry latent risks. Frustrated, Dr. White lashed out and left the room, leaving Blackwell to quietly ponder whether Beck’s abilities might one day become a liability.
Whether Blackwell was ultimately released remains unknown. Despite his innocence being proven, Dr. White's visit to his cell implies that he remained imprisoned after the events of the game.

- He's never refered by his full name in english media, only in the Japanese dub and promotional material he's mainly refered to as "Benedict Blackwell".
