"The newest adition to the Mighty Numbers. His timidity always slows down his siblings on the battlefield, but inside him lies a hidden power..."
- Character Profile
Mighty No. 9: Beck, is a robot with Xel absorbtion based abilities, and the ninth member of the Mighty Numbers line created by Dr. White. He is also the main character of his respective game.
Appearance[]
Beck has a white, circular collar with a small, blue rectangle, light grey on the four circles and lines in front and behind his white chest and pants merged together with a slim black line in between and on the sides of the chest armor. He is white on the middle part of his shoes with black circles around the top part of his shoes and the bottom part of his pants, two blue rectangles on the lower black part of the shoes, and his arms and legs are dark grey with a diamond shape across them. He has green eyes giving him an enthusiastic and determined look, his helmet is dark grey with a blue visor with ear phones and has fingerless gloves. He is about 152 cm (4'11.84) in height.
Personality[]
Above all else, Beck is defined by his empathy and kindness. When facing his corrupted siblings, he repeatedly tries to reason with them, even as Dr. White warns him it’s futile—most notably during his battle with Pyrogen. When Battalion accuses him of being a war machine, Beck firmly refutes the claim, insisting he would never fight without a just cause.
Despite his reluctance toward combat, Beck is unwaveringly loyal to those around him, particularly his creator, Dr. White. No matter his reservations, he always answers when Dr. White or Dr. Sanda call his name, eager to assist wherever needed. His dedication is further demonstrated when he outright rejects Countershade’s invitation to join a robot uprising, remaining steadfast in his principles.
However, Beck’s personality also carries a noticeable flaw—his timidity. Unlike his more confident siblings, Beck often hesitates and finds himself overwhelmed by the dangers he faces. Initially taken aback by the responsibility of rescuing the Mighty Numbers, he requires encouragement from Dr. White to step up. His fear manifests in multiple moments, such as his panicked reaction to the massive drill in Mic’s stage or his startled response to being locked in a room by Battalion, who mocks his apprehension.
Over the course of the story, Beck steadily evolves into a braver and more assured leader. What begins as uncertainty in battle transforms into fearless determination, culminating in him spearheading an attack against a colossal robot in the colosseum. By the time of the Ray DLC—set after the events of Mighty No. 9—Beck displays a remarkable shift in demeanor, facing the outcast of the Mighty Numbers with a calm, collected resolve.
Synopsis[]
Beck, the ninth and youngest member of the renowned Battle Colosseum team, the Mighty Numbers, stands apart from his siblings in a crucial way—he was not designed for combat efficiency. His timid nature often hindered the team’s performance, making him their weakest link. However, beneath his hesitation laid an untapped potential.
When a devastating virus spread, turning robots—including his own siblings—into berserk machines, Beck remained unaffected, alongside Call. Now, the fate of humanity rests in his hands, as he embarks on a mission to restore order and save his corrupted comrades.
Abilities[]
"There's a short dash, long dash, jump dash, spiral, slide, there's probably a dash that makes you breakfast! I don't know!"
- Mighty No. 9 Trailer: Masterclass
Beck's most distinctive ability is his AcXelerate dash, allowing him to briefly boost his speed or absorb Xels from weakened opponents. He can execute various dash techniques, including a short burst, an extended charge, a spiraling descent, and a slide maneuver to navigate obstacles and enemies with precision.
In his base form, Beck wields an arm-mounted energy cannon, which alternates between his left and right hand depending on his direction. This cannon fires red bullets that can either damage enemies outright or temporarily stun them, enabling Beck to dash into them and absorb their Xel.
Beyond his standard abilities, Beck possesses a unique power—the ability to utilize absorbed Xel to enhance his attributes or transform entirely. By defeating the other Mighty Numbers, he unlocks specialized transformations known as ReXelections, granting him access to new equipment and abilities suited to each battle.
Other Appearances[]
Beck is featured as one of three playable characters in the 8-bit crossover game Mighty Gunvolt, later returning in its sequel, Mighty Gunvolt Burst. Additionally, he makes a guest appearance as downloadable content in Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, a title co-developed by Team Ninja, Comcept, and Spark Unlimited.
Development[]
At the start of Beck's development, the team designed to give an overall cute vibe but with eyes that showed a strong will. While Kimo Kimo was working on Beck's design, Imaeda put together documents and filling in details about Beck and the world of Mighty No. 9 to provide help with the design process. They decided that the world of Mighty No. 9 revolved around "xel" technology.

Beck's original grey design
As of the November Update, the color of Beck's light grey armor was changed to a dazzling white. An explanation was given by Director Koji Imaeda, stating that "as a protagonist that could absorb the abilities of his siblings and take on various forms, our image of his appropriate color shifted from "neutrality" to "containing all possibilities"... and since white is a combination of all colors of light, we felt that would actually suit his character better!".
Trivia[]
- Beck's iconic signature depicts him saluting.
- Beck shares his Japanese voice actor with Nova, the main antagonist of Azure Striker Gunvolt.
- Beck is the only playable male character in Mighty No. 9.
- Beck is often compared to Mega Man as his successor:
- Both are designed by Keiji Inafune.
- Both wear helmets and armor with blue coloring.
- Both use weapons from their enemies.
- Both use a standard arm cannon while starting out.
- Both are robots that look like human children.
- Both have a friend whose name makes a pun if put after their name: Rock (Mega Man's original name) and Roll, and Beck and Call.
- Mega Man and Beck do, however, have some key differences:
- Unlike Mega Man (and Mega Man X) who are usually pacifists, Beck is not against violence despite being timid.
- Mega Man is blue and cyan all over while Beck is blue, black, and has three shades of grey (the light grey on his body is changed to white).
- Mega Man has a much simpler art style, while Beck's is more complex and detailed.
- Beck is made out of the Xel, rather than conventional mechanical parts.
- Mega Man was originally designed as Dr. Light's assistant and was later modified for combat, Beck on the other hand was designed for competitive combat matches.
- For some reason, Beck cannot transform when he's on a ladder.
- Beck's insignia is based around the concept of "synergy", since his abilities are based on Trinity's design (Absorbing Xels, Growing and Evolving), but making them greater than the sum of its parts.
- Beck is the only Mighty Number that doesn't display his number on its body.
